Gosh guys… I really dropped the ball here. I’ve had a somewhat insane couple of weeks (read all about them here) and well… I had to prioritize. I haven’t had any complaints, so maybe nobody is reading anyway, but I’m still going to try to finish out this month of posting my Grocery No-Spend Challenge.
We’re doing so-so with it. I’ve still managed to not do a major shopping trip, but with my husband working crazy-long hours, our routine and our meals are not “normal”. Plus we’ve had some unexpected family things, some unexpected church activities, and yesterday, a long day of travel to a funeral that led to me spending on some things I’d never have bought under normal circumstances.
Okay, so on the 11th, I spent $55.07 at Walmart. This included 5 big bags of green beans (for our church Valentine’s banquet), drinks for Richy for work, big bag of sugar, 2 gallons of milk, bacon bits (for the beans), matches, shampoo, and chocolate milk mix.
Then on the 12th I spent $72.04 at Walmart & Dollar General. This is the only day I have no idea what I bought at Walmart other than 3 boxes of different kinds of bandaids because Caleb had severely cut his finger. I had just dipped 400+ strawberries and worked on way too many orders and well… we went shopping and out to dinner that night but I cannot for the life of me find the receipts. The Dollar General portion was spent by my husband. He bought Valentine’s treats for me and and the kids on his way home from work to surprise us. I never saw that receipt either but it was such a sweet gesture on his part. He picked out something special for each child – something that matched their personality … and he got me a single rose and chocolate… because well, the man knows what I love!
On the 15th – 3 gallons of milk at Dollar General, $12.20. and $30.52 at our local grocery store on shredded cheese (for a supper recipe + salads), bread, croutons, salad mix, sandwich meat and Diet Dr. Pepper (aka my “morning coffee”).
On the 16th, I spent $18.06 at Walmart and that included some cleaning products (SOS pads, toilet cleaner) and some salsa verde for a recipe.
And lastly, on the 17th I spent $26.99 at Walmart – basically on snacks & junk food. We had a 6 hour trip to make to a funeral and the bottom line is… kids whine less if we have snacks on hand. (And snacks are cheaper in bulk from Walmart vs. at gas stations along the way) We left early, so I bought some easy breakfast items (muffins & Sunny D), some snacks (Little Debbie Cakes, Oatmeal Cookies & Apples), and some gum. Oh and wipes… the wipes box got taken out of the truck and we need wipes if traveling and eating… especially since I was trying to keep them clean on the way to the funeral.
And that’s it… I’m 99% sure that’s all of my spending from the 11th through the 18th.
So… here’s our total’s so far:
Total spending days 11-18: $214.88
Total for February so far: $420.88 (13 gallons of milk so far)*
*Recently someone asked me how much milk a family of 8 drank and I guessed 6-8 gallons a week. I thought it would be fun to track it this much and see how much we actually use!
