Have you made New Year’s Resolutions? I don’t know about ‘resolutions’, but I have written out goals for the year. These include goals for our finances, personal goals, and goals for this blog. We are also participating in the Eat from the Pantry Challenge over at Money Saving Mom. My husband and I talked it over and thought it was something that we could benefit from and it would be a great way to get our grocery budget off on the right foot for the year! I’ll try to post more about this another day. However today, I want to tell you about another challenge that I came across and it’s definitely a challenge that I need to go after!
I’m talking about the Declutter Challenge over at The Finer Things. Amy is challenging herself to get rid of 760 ‘things’ from her home in 365 days (2 items per day for the entire year). Since one of the goals I had in my personal list was to simplify my life, my schedule, etc., I thought simplifying our home would be a great addition to that list! Now, considering that we’re living in a furnished rental home…and by furnished, I mean the owner left every. single. thing. she owns in the house, including her dishes, her shoes, her canned foods, etc…well, let’s just say it was already cluttered when we moved in.
Then add in that we moved in the clothes, toys, shoes, dishes, etc. of our family of seven – well, things are spilling out of every crevice of this house! Plus, we’re a cluttered family in general – a messy family. I don’t like this trait, and I’m not proud of it, but I am aware of it and it’s something I would love to change this year! In the past I’ve bought books about it and they are wonderful… The Messies Manual was my most recent purchase. Unfortunately, as great as they are…you actually have to read them and apply them for them to work, not put them on a bookshelf and add them to the clutter!
So in the spirit of a good challenge, I’m going to get rid of lots of stuff this year! Granted, I can’t get rid of the owners things, and we’ve tried to pack away as many of them as possible, but we can whittle down our own ‘things’ quite a bit and give ourselves more room to breathe in this home God has blessed us with! We may not still be here in a year, but if we are, I want it to be a more peaceful, clutter-free environment.
So, that’s my goal. I’m adding it to the list. I want to get rid of at least 760 things this year! I will be posting form time to time, showing you pictures of all the things we’re ridding ourselves of. Now, since we’re already 7 days into January and I only discovered the challenge last night, I’m going to have to play catch up. BUT, a couple of months ago I started a box of things I wanted to donate and since
I’ve been to stinking lazy to get it to the donation box the past couple of months have been hectic and the box is still sitting here, I’m going to count those things toward getting me started.
Would you like to join in on this challenge? I’d love to hear about your goals for this year!
